Sophie's Bad Day!

Sophie had to get her tonsils and adenoids out a couple of days ago.  She's had trouble with waking up repeatedly at night and the doctors thought one reason might be the size of her tonsils and adenoids making it difficult for her to breathe.  The only solution was to take them out.
She was so brave the entire morning, although bored as the above picture clearly shows! When we went back to the room to get ready, she answered all the nurse's and doctor's questions, she let them do all the pre-op stuff and she was so very happy when she learned that "fuzzy" the white bear was hers to take home. She was pretty happy she got to play a Nintendo DS while she waited for her procedure.
She got pretty scared when we went into the operating room. They let me go with her and luckily the anesthesia is given through a mask and put her completely out before she ever had to get an IV or anything else potentially painful.  Still, when the initial watermelon smell coming through the mask turned into a medicine smell, she got freaked out and tried to push it off.  I was able to calm her down and she was out in about 30 seconds.  Of course, I cried on the walk to the waiting room! :(
This is her right after she woke up.  She was in so much pain and was so scared and sad. They upped her morphine and gave her a DVD to watch (Puss in Boots) in bed and that calmed her down a lot.
She was in recovery for an hour and a half and then she was released to go.  The nurses there were so wonderful and took such great care of her.  She got to pick a toy on her way out.  (The surgery was at Children's Hospital of Oakland's outpatient surgery center in Walnut Creek so it was completely set up to cater to the exact needs of children).  She picked a Hannah Montana pen and paper set that she wrote her thoughts in later on in the day.
Grandma and Grandpa Scott sent her this dog and flowers and that helped cheer her up.  We had friends who brought her a box a popsicles and one who brought our family dinner that night.  All of that was very sweet and very appreciated.
We made it through the first 48 hours which was the worst.  We had to give her pain medication every four hours including through out the night.  And she HATES the pain medication!  That was super fun for all of us at 2am!  But she is just resting now, watching lots of TV and being waited on like a princess.  She has to relax for another week and won't be able to return to full activity for a week after that.  But she is comfortable and happy and that's the most important thing.  She's been such a sweet and brave little girl and we've been so blessed as usual!
